HP EliteBook 8460p Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Hard Disk Drive
 Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the hard disk drive for the HP EliteBook 8460p Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
Small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdrivers

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your
unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the
Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part.
If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number,
please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either
the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not
affect performance or functionality of the unit. |

- Failure to comply with the precautions
could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
- Observe all precautions when removing and replacing components.

On the bottom of the notebook, slide the battery release latch (identified with a battery icon) to the release position.
Slide the battery out of the battery bay.
On the bottom of the notebook, slide the bottom cover release latch (identified with a bottom cover icon) to the release position to partially eject the bottom cover.
Lift the bottom cover out of the accessory bay and remove.
Pull the tab on the smart card reader to disengage the tabs that secure it to the base enclosure and rotate the smart card reader to gain access to the hard disk drive.
Loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive to the base enclosure.
Use the black mylar tab located on the hard disk drive enclosure to slide the hard disk drive away from the hard disk drive connector on the system board.
Lift the hard disk drive out of the hard disk drive bay.
Place the hard disk drive in a static dissipative bag.
Hard disk drive replacement
Remove the hard disk drive from the static dissipative bag.
Place the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay and align it with the hard disk drive connector on the system board.
Use the black mylar tab located on the hard disk drive enclosure to slide the hard disk drive securely into the hard disk drive connector.
Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive to the base enclosure.
Rotate the smart card reader into position on the base enclosure and pull the tab on the smart card reader to engage the tabs that secure it to the base enclosure.
Align the edges of the bottom cover with the edges of the accessory bay and place the bottom cover into position.
Slide the bottom cover toward the rear of the notebook until it is properly seated and the bottom cover release latch clicks.
Slide the bottom cover release latch to the locked position to secure the bottom cover in the accessory bay.
Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the battery release latch clicks.
Slide the battery release latch to the locked position to secure the battery in the battery bay.
| CAUTION:
|
Any red visible under the bottom cover and battery release latches indicate that the bottom cover is not securely locked in the accessory bay. This may allow the bottom cover and the battery to slide out inadvertently. |
