HP ProBook 6550b Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard
Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP ProBook 6550b Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
Small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdriver.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your
unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the
Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part.
If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number,
please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either
the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not
affect performance or functionality of the unit. |

On the bottom of the notebook, loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws identified with a keyboard icon.
Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
Using a non-metallic flat bladed tool, slide the retention tabs on the top edge of the keyboard forward.
Lift up on the top edge of the keyboard and slide it toward the rear of the notebook to release its alignment tabs.
Flip the keyboard toward the front of the notebook.
Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the pointing stick ZIF connector and disconnect the pointing stick ribbon cable from the system board.

Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the keyboard ZIF connector and disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the system board.

Remove the keyboard from the base enclosure.
Keyboard replacement
Place the keyboard face down onto the palm rest.
Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.

Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector.
Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.

Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ribbon cable into the ZIF connector.
Flip the keyboard over and toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the slots on the top cover and lower the keyboard into position.
Slide the retention tabs on the top edge of the keyboard toward the rear of the notebook to secure it to the base enclosure.
Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws identified with a keyboard icon.
