HP HotSpot LaserJet Pro M1218nfs MFP Series - Setting up the Printer as a HotSpot
Introduction
Enabling the HotSpot feature on your printer turns your printer into a Wi-Fi HotSpot that offers secure wireless Internet access for up to eight clients. The HotSpot feature supports the average day-to-day office activities (Internet browsing, emailing, file sharing, sending instant messages, etc.) for computers, smart phones, or tablets. It also allows you to print wirelessly from those devices through Direct Printing.

NOTE:

Your HotSpot-enabled printer is not a full functional stand-alone router. It should not be used for tasks that generate heavy Internet traffic, such as P2P downloading and multiple concurrent video streaming. Actual network performance depends on upper Internet bandwidth and the type and number of applications being used. |
This document provides steps to enable your HotSpot either during or after software installation when your printer is connected by a Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) connection or a Dynamic or Static IP address with a router connection. Your printer supports these connection types.

Setting up the printer as a HotSpot
Select one of the following methods to enable the HotSpot feature on your printer.
Method one: Enable the HotSpot feature during software installation (Windows only)
Use the following steps to set up your printer as a HotSpot during software installation.
After installing the printer driver, the computer prompts you to continue installation and enable HotSpot & Direct Print. From the HotSpot & Direct Print Configuration screen, select Enable HotSpot & Direct Print
, and then click Next
to enable or disable the Security Mode.

Select one of the following Security Mode options, and then click Next
.
Select one of the following options that indicate how you connect to
the Internet, and then click Next
.
Dynamic IP
PPPoE
Static IP

If you selected PPoE or Static IP, follow the on-screen instructions, and then click Next
. |
A summary of the current settings displays.
Click Next
, and then follow the on-screen instructions to set up other features.
Method two: Enable the HotSpot feature after software installation through the Wireless Configuration Utility (Windows only)
Select your operating system, and then follow the steps to set up the HotSpot feature using the Windows Wireless Configuration Utility.

Make sure the printer and computer are connected with a USB cable. |
Windows XP
Click Start ( 
), click All Programs
, and then click HP
. Select your printer, and then click Wireless Configuration
to open the Wireless Configuration Utility.
From the Wireless and HotSpot & Direct Print Configuration Utility
screen, select HotSpot & Direct Print
, and then click Next
.
Select Enable HotSpot & Direct Print
, and then click Next
to enable or disable the Security Mode.

Method three: Enable the HotSpot feature after software installation through the Embedded Web Server (Windows and Mac)
Follow these steps to set up the HotSpot feature through the EWS.

A network connection is required in order to enable the HotSpot feature using the EWS. If you do not have a network connection, use a previous method to set up the HotSpot feature. |
Step one: Locate the IP address, and then open the EWS
The IP address is located on the configuration page. Follow these steps to print a configuration page.
On the printer control panel, press the Setup button ( 
). Press the Right Arrow button ( 
) to select Reports
, and then press OK
. Press the Right Arrow button (
) to select Config Report
, and then press OK
to print the report. The printer IP address displays in the Network Information section of the report next to IPv4 Address.

NOTE:

Make sure that you type the IP address into the web browser address window. If you type it into a tool bar search box by mistake, the EWS will not open. |

. The EWS opens.
Step two: Enable the HotSpot feature
Follow these steps to enable the HotSpot & Direct Print
feature from the EWS.
From the EWS, click the HotSpot & Direct Print
tab, and then select Enable
.
Click Apply
to save changes.

NOTE:

If a printer admin password has been set in the
EWS, type it here. If you do not know the password,
contact the printer administrator. Continue to the next section for more information
about setting or changing the printer admin password.You also have the option to review and change
Security, LAN, and PPPoE settings from the navigation
menu on the left. |
How do I set or change the printer admin password?

The admin password is different than the HotSpot password. Use the admin password in the EWS to set up or change the
printer's configuration parameters. |
Follow these steps to open the EWS, and then set a printer admin password or change an existing password at any time after the HotSpot feature is enabled.
Step one: Locate the IP address, and then open the EWS
The IP address is located on the configuration page. Follow these steps to print a configuration page.
On the printer control panel, press the Setup button (
). Press the Right Arrow button (
) to select Reports
, and then press OK
. Press the Right Arrow button (
) to select Config Report
, and then press OK
to print the report. The printer IP address displays in the Network Information section of the report next to IPv4 Address.

Step two: Set or change your password

The admin password is different than the HotSpot password. Use the admin password in the EWS to set up or change the
printer's configuration parameters. |
From the EWS, click the Admin Password
tab.
Type the new password in the Password
box, and then type it in the
Confirm Password
box.
Click Apply
to save the password.

NOTE:

If a password was already set, the screen prompts you to type the current password before you can change it. |
